Special Third Cinema Issue: Conversation with Mestman, Buchsbaum, and Stutesman

“Fernando Solanas and Octavio Getino went on to write many essays and revisited their former writings on the basis of the experience that they gathered from the screening-events of The Hour of the Furnaces. Unfortunately enough, apart from the iconic ‘Towards a Third Cinema,’ nothing has been translated so far.

Mariano Mestman (UBA & CONICET, Argentina) and Jonathan Buchsbaum (CUNY, USA) guest edited a special issue (Vol. 62, No. 1, Spring 2021) of the journal Framework where, for the first time, some of these hitherto untranslated writings by Solanas and Getino appear in English. Also appears Guy Hennebelle's CinémAction group's response to The Hour of the Furnaces, translated from French for the first time.

On June 3, Mestman, Buchsbaum, and Drake Stutesman (Editor, Framework) spoke on this special issue and the translations as a part of the seminar series of the Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Jodhpur.

This is our tribute to Fernando Solanas who, in October 2020, expressed his interest in continuing this translational exchange but contracted COVID a few days later and never returned.”—Parichay Patra, Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur
